SAN DIEGO (AP) — The state has recovered more than $27 million from insurance companies for victims of the wildfires that ravaged San Diego County in October 2007.

California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner announced Monday the funds went to consumers who notified the department claiming insurers treated them unfairly.

The department received 391 consumer complaints about insurance companies after the Witch Creek fire in 2007. The wildfire was one of several that tore through San Diego County, destroying 1,300 homes and killing two people.

The California Insurance Department says the fires caused $2.3 billion in losses.
