Police worked late into the night collecting evidence and talking to witnesses of the officer involved shooting at the Cedar Wood Apartments.

The suspect lay dead near the SUV he was driving.

Its windows shot out.

Bullet holes in the door.

Officers were called to complex earlier in the afternoon.

They'd been looking for the 30 year old bulldog gang member and got a tip he was at the complex.

Brittany Caldera said she passed the suspect and his girlfriend on her way to do laundry.

“He was already going to the car and the lady was a little behind and he was like 'come on let's go’,” Caldera said.

One resident - who didn't want us to show his face - was about a hundred feet away when police confronted the suspect.

“They told him to get out of the car. And I guess he didn't get out of the car and all I just heard was nine rounds,” the neighbor told us.

Investigators say the suspect had a gun.

“He had the firearm in his waistband. He reached for the gun. And after he refused repeated commands to submit to arrest that's when officers fired,” said Captain Randy Dobbins with the Fresno Police Department.

Fresno police had been looking for the suspects for three weeks after a shooting in which another gang member was wounded.

“We had done everything we could to reach out to his friends and family to get him to voluntarily submit to arrest and none of those were successful,” Dobbins said.

The suspect reportedly has an extensive rap sheet, violent crimes, and a list that runs four pages long.
