Local politicians are drafting a letter asking the USDA to allow Central Valley Meat Company to reopen.

The plant was shut down earlier this week after an undercover video was released showing animal abuse of sick cows.

Congressmen Devin Nunes, Jeff Denham and Kevin McCarthy issued a plea, calling the people responsible for the video, extremists.

In a statement, Congressman Nunes said, "In early 2012, a group used improvised explosive devices to blow up fourteen trucks used for transporting livestock not far from Hanford, citing animal welfare as their excuse. Now, area residents are confronted with economic terrorism."

The people who filmed these acts should be thanked for uncovering these acts. The people who own the slaughterhouse have hired a public relations company. It shows they only care about money! I hope the owners and the people who carried out these acts filmed by the extremist are criminally charged to the full extenct of the law. Just because they are animals does not mean they don’t feel pain or fear. Devin you have far more important thingS to be concerned with than the "ANIMAL ABUSERS".

If the people handling these animals in this video are condemned as "abusers" I would charge the video cameramen as accomplices to the act, they didn't turn this in for the animals well being. As far as hiring public relations, what do you expect? The last company this happened to was put out of business within a week after media got a hold of it. they had only been in business for 30 something years, owners lost everything. Media wants to hold plant owners and employees accountable, however what they fail to mention is these animals arrived at the plant in this condition and the plant is only trying to slaughter them as quickly as possible to put them out of their distress. The plant buys them as they come in, possibly having owned them for a few hours at most. USDA regulation states that cattle can not be slaughtered unless they can walk. Some come off trucks already unable to walk, what are the plant personal to do? Their job can be difficult, they are simply asking the animal to stand up so they can be put down. How do you ask a sick or injured cow to stand up, do you say please? I would imagine asking a terminal cancer patient in a hospital to turn over so you can change his bed pan is unpleasant, but it still needs to be done. Asking a injured cow to stand can be unpleasant also, but it is required. These people need to balance regulation with good animal husbandry and in some circumstances it is a fine line and a difficult decision. We should pity them in their position not persecute them. As far as the animal rights folks, hey, sorry, their just in for the money!

These animals we're not "sick", rather they were lame (unable to walk well). The so called abuse captured on video are practices that are governed by the USDA. Until we all are educated on the animal welfare practices as set forth by the USDA, we should pass no judgement on the actions of those whose livelihoods depend on them. Further, we should not allow these bullies with "eat no meat" agendas to get the better of production agriculture.

Respect for air, water, land, sea and the resources they provide, is dependent on education. The meat plant provides jobs for many valley families. Allow the meat processing plant to open with regulations and education in place to treat livestock humanely and process injured animals immediately to minimize suffering.

The only extremists are the people who torture animals. Animals raised for food should be treated humanely. The people who filmed these acts should be thanked for uncovering these acts. I heard the people who own the slaughterhouse have hired a public relations company. It shows they only care about money! I hope the people who carried out these acts that were filmed by the so-called extremist are criminally charged. Just because they are animals does not mean they don’t feel pain or fear. Animals raised for food should be treated humanely.

The individuals who recorded the video at COK are extreme? Are you kidding me? So what are we calling the individuals being inhumane to the animals?
