A Tulare County Sheriff's Deputy shot a suspect after the man allegedly attacked him with a hatchet Tuesday night.

The deputy, assigned to the Porterville substation, stopped a car near the town of Ducor, when one of the people inside lunged at the officer with a hatchet.

There was a brief struggle and the deputy managed to pull his gun and shoot the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Orlando Garcia Ensaldo.

The driver of the car is his father, 52-year-old Nicholas Sanchez Ensaldo.

Both men are from Mexico, living in the Richgrove area.

The son is still being treated and will be booked for attempted homicide. The father was arrested for driving under the influence and an INS hold.

The deputy was treated and released.
