The gloves are off in the battle over trash collection in the City of Fresno.

Union supporters were out gathering signatures again on Thursday. Enough signatures and they could overturn the city's plan to transfer trash to a private company.

The union got the Attorney General involved after the city began running commercials promoting privatization, claiming misuse of public funds.

Union representative Marina Magdaleno said, "We want the attorney general to investigate."

Magdaleno sent Attorney General Kamalah Harris a letter requesting an investigation into the City of Fresno's "misuse of public funds for political campaign purposes."

The city responded saying: "Governmental entities may use public funds to make information available to the public. The total amount budgeted for production and media buys is $57,000."

Petitioners need 22,000 signatures by January 18th to hold a special election, which will let voters decide.

Mayor Swearengin says there will be consequences by the action because the City of Fresno would be faced with declaring a fiscal emergency and laying off employees.

If trash plan approved by the Fresno City Council moves forward, outsourcing would begin in March.

I live in a mobile home park that was forced to change trash companys because the city of fresno no longer wanted the account. In the3 last 3 months our trash pick up bill has tripled. what was costing each home owner about $4.68 a month is now costing us a fresno recovery fee that started @0.21 is now $0.53 a month, recycle bins or $0.10, sanitation fee's very from month to month Started @ $.10 now $.14, trash started 2 $15.00 This month $15.66 these prices are per unit.so with the 101 units in the park we where paying a total of $472.68 a month with city trash pick up and now with mid valley trash we are paying $16.47 per unit that amount to $1663.47 a month. so dont beleive the mayor saying it will save you money. And dont think the city employee's will have job security after a year.
