We’re learning more about a 17-year-old arrested for shooting a 91-year-old woman during a home invasion robbery in San Joaquin.
Marcella Miller has not been home since the attack Thanksgiving morning. The 91-year-old is in the hospital, partially paralyzed from the gunshot.
Fresno Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a teen they believe shot her.
An intruder climbed through a window of the home where Marcella and her 63-year-old daughter live. He tried to rob the women.
Detectives tracked down the 17-year-old suspect at the Garden Valley Apartments, about a mile and a half away.
The teen and his mother were arrested.
Neighbors didn’t want to appear on camera. But several people told CBS47 the 17-year-old suspect had a history of vandalism.
“It's disturbing. It's a small town, you don't suspect that here,” said a neighbor who didn’t want to be identified.
Fresno Sheriff Margaret Mims says the teen will be charged with attempted murder. His mother will be charged as an accessory after the fact.
After his arrest, the teen tried to hang himself in a holding cell.
“When detectives went to that cell to interview him they discovered he had attempted to kill himself by twisting a shirt around his neck,” said Sheriff Mims.
The Sheriff is asking for anyone with information on the case to come forward.
“We need information from the public. If anyone has any additional details, I’m encouraging them to call the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department at 488-3111.
The Sheriff would not comment on what lead them to the suspect.
Marcella Miller’s neighbors are relieved an arrest has been made.
“I just worry about her, hoping she gets better,” said neighbor Maria Lopez.
Seven other children in the suspect’s home have been placed in the custody of Child Protective Services.
