Taft student to be tried as adult

Kern County District Attorney Lisa Green announced Monday morning that 16-year-old Bryan Oliver will be tried as an adult for last week's school shooting. 

Oliver faces two charges of attempted murder and three charges of assault with a firearm. 

Oliver told investigators he shot 16-year-old Bowe Cleveland because he bullied him. Cleveland, was shot in the chest and abdomen but is expected to survive.

A teacher also received a minor wound from a shotgun pellet but was not targeted.

Oliver entered a plea of not guilty Monday afternoon.

Veteran volunteers plan stand guard at 14 area schools when students return to class on Tuesday.
