The community is mourning the loss of a teacher at Fresno’s Sunnyside High School.
55-year old Jim Healy was killed Tuesday morning when a vehicle struck the bike he was riding.  It happened on Auberry Road, just north of Copper Ave. in Fresno County.

Clovis City Councilman, Nathan Magsig, was part of the group cycling with Jim Healy.

“It simply was an accident.  I don’t know if this incident could have been avoided,” said Nathan Magsig.

The 55-year Healy old was not only a computer repair teacher at Sunnyside High School; he was a bike enthusiast who was in tremendous physical shape.

“Even into his 50s he could put the hurt on a lot of 20 year olds,” said Magsig.

Magsig says it was dark on Auberry Road around 5:30 a.m. and the 14 riders were single file with lights on their bikes.

Then for some reason, investigators say Healy made a move like he was doing a U-turn and wound up drifting into the path of a jeep.

Jim, a husband and father of three, was rushed to the hospital and later died.

“He was an individual that’s going to be sorely missed because there are few people in this world where you desire to be around them and Jim was one of those individuals,” said Magsig.

Delbert Mock worked with Jim for years at Sunnyside High and the two became great friends.

“Jim was just a man of God and just an awesome guy to know.  We had lunches together and we would spend time in prayer,” said Delbert Mock.

One of Jim’s biggest desires was for his students to succeed.

“He loved students.  He wanted them to have a passion for technology like he had,” said Mock.

Fresno Unified expressed its condolences with a written statement saying, “Mr. Healy was the technology teacher and the go to person for any technology needs at the school.  He will be missed by not only the Sunnyside community, but the entire district.”
