Texting and driving is a deadly problem... and it's against the law.

Teens are especially at risk, so CBS47 is On Your Side with information teens and parents need to know.

Texting and driving is risky for anyone, regardless of experience level or age, but for inexperienced teenage drivers, the risk is even higher.

CBS47's Jack Highberger went to Roosevelt High School on Thursday, where a new program hopes to raise awareness about the dangers of texting and driving.

Roosevelt students got a first hand look at the dangers with a simulator and short presentation that drove home what many students already knew about the dangers. "It can kill yourself or kill someone else," said student Joseph Ruiz.

According to the CDC, more than one in four drivers between the ages of 18 and 29 say they regularly text while driving. That is something the "It Can Wait" campaign hopes to change.

Griffin Hegler with "It Can Wait" said, "The most common response we get from students is they just never really think about how difficult it is until they do it on the simulator.'

The hope being a few virtual crashes can go a long way to preventing the real thing.

"it's not worth taking a text and risking your life for it....when it can wait,"  said Joseph Ruiz.
