Two weeks before the election, the debate over food labels rages on.

One of the propositions on the ballot requires food labels on food products that are genetically modified.

In a lab at Fresno state, Plant Geneticist Dr. Alejandro Calderon develops plants that eventually grow in a greenhouse.

“We in this country have been growing corn, soybeans for the last 10 to 15 years and most of those are genetically modified,” he says.

He says genetically modified foods are designed to eliminate insects and certain diseases...

“I'm aware of the scientific evidence that supports idea that genetically modified plants are safe to humans and to the environment,” he says.

Dr. Calderon believes labeling foods will educate the public about what's in their food.

That’s  why he supports Proposition 37.

If 37 passes, you'd see labels on fruits, vegetables and other processed foods.

But big food companies have spent millions of dollars fighting it, saying labeling will lead to frivolous lawsuits and higher prices for consumers.

Manuel Cunha ... of Nisei Farmers league says it'll put farmers out of business.

“They're going to be asked to produce all sorts of documents. Where they bought it from. What type of crop the genetic makeup etc etc.,” says Cunha.

Proponents say this isn't about economics...it's about your right to know and choose whether engineered foods are good or bad for you.

As a parent and consumer i need to know what's in my food so i can make the choice for me and my family, said Karen Kennerley at the farmer’s market.

Both sides agree everyone will feel the impact.

they once said asbestos was safe and it was banned as not safe. they once said ddt was safe to use on food and now it is banned. they once said mercury was safe to use on farm land only back to the 1960s and it is now banned as not safe. now monsanto says gmo is safe. all i am asking is to label the food and let me decide if i wish to eat gmo food. why hide gmo if it is so great they should be proud to label it and not hide their gmo product. vote yes on prop 37 and lets get a label
