Police say a pharmacy clerk shot a man who tried robbing him and his mother in their pharmacy.

It happened at about 6:30 Tuesday night at the Almond Avenue Pharmacy in Madera.

Police say two men barged in through the back door...firing a handgun.

They say the son fired back and shot one of the suspects.

He ran off with his accomplice, but only made it a few blocks down. A blood trail led police to his body.

The mother was shot in the leg, and is expected to be ok.

“We can't remember the last time we had something as extreme as this. Ten rounds were fired. Five by each party... the scene is pretty extensive inside the building,” said Madera Police Chief Steve Frazier.

Police are still searching for the second suspect, but had little details about him.

The pharmacy doesn't have surveillance video, and police are interviewing witnesses.

The owners aren’t facing charges, but the investigation is ongoing.
