A petition is circulating in Fresno that would undo a recent city council decision to privatize residential trash service.

The Fresno City Council voted to approve a measure giving the city's residential trash service to a Mid Valley Disposal.

Those against the move are now circulating a petition to get the trash issue on a ballot, so citizens can vote on the issue.

Marina Magdaleno, a spokesperson for the union said, "At some point in time, maybe not next year or the following year, but at some point you know, the cost of our trash will skyrocket because there will be no limits to what the private hauler can charge the residents of Fresno."

The petition needs 22,000 signatures before January 8th.

City leaders still stand by their decision to move to privatization.

Fresno City Manager Mark Scott said, "We're in a position where running out of money to provide the service to the public is a major problem, so this gives us a chance to keep our services up, provide lower rates, and keep employees from our current jobs employed in the private sector."

The city gets $2.5 million a year in franchise fees from Mid Valley Disposal under the recently approved plan.
