Fresno police are investigating a crash that killed a doctor Friday night.

30-year-old Melissa Dowd was struck and killed while crossing a street at Shepherd & Cedar.

Dowd was from Virginia and was a medical resident at Community Regional Medical Center.

Investigators say it appears Dowd and a friend were hit in a crosswalk but did not wait for the traffic light to change.

Lt. Anthony Martinez said, "Based on some of the initial information that we're getting, that the pedestrians may have been trying to beat the red or get across against the red when struck by the car."

The driver of the car stopped and is cooperating with the investigation.
