A Fresno Police officer shot and killed a known gang member Monday afternoon.
The shooting happened near Sunnyside Avenue and Kings Canyon Road in Southeast Fresno.
Investigators say the police officer stopped the suspect…a parolee with a warrant out for his arrest.
But the suspect took off running.
The officer chased him on foot into the Fashion Park Apartments.
They had a physical confrontation and the suspect pulled out a knife.
“The officer was making what we refer to as consensual contact…stopped to talk to the individual. The person did tell him when he was asked--whether he was on parole. He said yes he was…
It was shortly thereafter that he ran from the officer,” said Chief Jerry Dyer.
The suspect died at the hospital.
The officer is a 5 year veteran with the department.
He's on paid administrative leave.
