Dozens of people broke the ice in downtown Fresno Friday night as a new skating rink opened to the public.

Business owners and Community Regional Medical Center teamed up to pay for the rink located on the Fulton Mall, near the clock tower area.

A live band provided rhythm for skaters in a festive winter atmosphere.  Trees are decked out with lights and snowflakes and spirits are high.

“It's like a big city in a little city.  It's awesome.  This is one of the best things the city has ever put for us out here,” said Francisco Jacobo, an ice skater.

Francisco Jacobo used this as a training ground for his son.

“It's like walking for him, he's learning.  He fell a couple times, but he's learning,” said Jacobo.

Most of us would agree it was pretty cold out Friday tonight, so it was unusual seeing a young woman wearing a tank top.

“I’m used to it and you're moving around, so you get hot.  I actually don't put on a jacket until it gets about 30,” said Melissa Scruggs, an ice skater.

Turns out Melissa Scruggs is a transplant from Kansas City, Missouri.

“I only get to skate outside when I go home for Christmas, so it's really nice to have one here in town,” said Scruggs.

The rink is designed to both entertain and showcase Fulton Mall.

“We want people to come and see that it is an exciting venue, there are things happening.  So we're hoping it will bring them back,” said Kate Borders, President of PBID Partners of Downtown Fresno.

Steven Seita is sold.

“It's awesome for the family.  I'll definitely be back with my two daughters.  It's in a wonderful spot.  It's beautiful out here and I’d encourage everybody to check it out,” said Steven Seita.

The ice rink will remain open until January 13th.  Hours of operation are Sunday through Thursday from 10 am - 8 pm.  Friday and Saturday 10 am to 10 pm.  You will also be able to skate on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Admission for adults is $10.  Children 12 and under are $8.  Prices include skate rental and parking.

My son went to the rink on Saturday, was there thirty minutes. Thief broke into his pickup, two of his friends had the same thing happen.$250 for window, $100 for labor to replace window, called police they said fill out a report online. $350 plus a stolen purse priceless.
