When an amber alert lights up, the CHP is looking for a missing child... possibly abducted and in trouble.

On January 1st 2013, a new system called the Silver Alert will help CHP find missing adults...

It’s hard for them to give up their independence,” said Clay Ice.

Clay Ice’s in laws just took a road trip…and there's the concern of the unknown.

“They're in their 80s and so there's always a question in the back of your mind.

The system is for adults with dementia or Alzheimer’s... who wander off.

“The senior has to have some kind of medical disability,” said CHP Officer James Pennick.

Elder abuse prevention advocates say the government is finally realizing that wandering is a big problem with elderly.

And one in every three families has someone suffering from the debilitating disorder.

“For those who get in their car and found the next day someplace else-it can be effective,” said Cynthia Benzler with Castle Keep Elder Abuse Prevention.

Families say they'd appreciate any help they can get in the search for a missing parent.

“We hear that once in a while where someone got lost and they don't know where they are and someone has to go look for them,” said Andy Neufeld.
