A new movie called "The Help" hits close to home for a local group called the Junior League of Fresno.

The movie is set in the sixties during the civil rights era. It tells of a young woman who is in the Junior League, who asks a black maid to tell how life is working for rich white women, a dangerous request with a powerful message.

The Junior League President of Fresno says the movie represents how the international group has become more diverse over the years and she is an example of how attitudes have changed since then.

Junior League of Fresno President Lisa Haynes-Scott "It just shows how diverse and how great the women in Junior League are. To become the president, it has to be that your peers respond to you and they respect you. And that's what it shows me, my peers have a lot of respect for me and together we're going to make Junior League of Fresno great."

There is a Junior League in every city in the U.S. and the members volunteer to improve the quality of life for women and children in the community.

The movie The Help is due out in theaters on August 10th.

Hmm that prior post seems a bit generalized - the statement of terminal preppiness. So.. a little trivia for you. There are currently 296 Leagues in Canada, the United States, Mexico and the UK. The first League outside the United States was in Montreal, Canada. Junior Leagues are educational and charitable women's organizations aimed at improving their communities through volunteerism and building their members' civic leadership skills through training. JL Members: If Katherine Hepburn was a preppy...well then, yes. Not too shabby though. And there are so many more esteemed members; Eudora Welty, Sandra Day O'Connor, Barbara Bush, Laura Bush, Julia Child, Cornelia Fort (the first female pilot in American history to die on active duty), Jeannie Deakyne (Army Officer and recipient of the Bronze Star Medal), Pat Evans (mayor), former three-term mayor of Plano, Texas from 2002–2009, Margaret Hamilton, actress, best known for her portrayal of the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz, Oveta Culp Hobby, first secretary of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, first commanding officer of the Women's Army Corps. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junior_League Pretty impressive group. What these women have in common is a desire to achieve and return service to their community. They're the movers and shakers. They are national and international. That's what Junior League is now. I have been a member in two states now after a transfer to CA. And the women, no matter where, all have a common goal - to make their city a better place and serve their community. Want to learn more? The JLF is having an informational meeting at the Woodward Park Library on August 15 at 6:30pm. Women are welcome and encouraged to attend. See Junior League Fresno on Facebook for more info. I am proud to be a member of a vast, diverse group of women who work so hard within their community. And nary a topsider in my closet.

In "every city" in the USA????? Doubtful. Usually and traditionally "preppie" girls and women are a part of this organization. How do I know this? My mother (RIP) was a member and volunteer with this fine organization for decades.
