The mother of a Fresno man arrested in connection with Wednesday's officer involved shooting speaks out.

Cynthia Williams spoke with CBS47 about her son, Dedrick, who was arrested Thursday morning on attempted robbery charges.

Police say he attempted to rob a street vender near the Fresno Fairgrounds around 5:00 p.m. Wednesday night. When the suspect, reportedly armed with a knife, confronted a Fresno Police Officer, the officer opened fire.

Williams says her son now has five bullet wounds in his right arm and legs following the shooting. He was arrested Thursday morning outside a girl’s apartment where he was reportedly hiding out.

Williams says her son called her from the apartment and told her he wanted to turn himself in because he was injured but was afraid he would be shot by police because there was a warrant out on him for missing a court date for a previous incident several weeks ago.

In an interview, Williams said, “I know how he is around the house -- I don’t know how he is on the street. You know how sometimes you can raise your kids one way and they turn out to do something totally different.”

Police had the area where the shooting happened blocked off for several hours and found a knife similar to the one the office saw before shooting his gun.

Williams says her son did not have a knife and he said they could check the one they found for finger prints.
