A toddler was killed in a tragic accident in Madera County.

It happened Wednesday morning on Martin Street near Road 26.

The mother of a 19-month-old girl was getting ready to go to the store in her SUV. She thought the little girl was inside with family members but she had actually wandered outside.

The child was struck when the mother was backing the vehicle out and died at the scene.

Mark Cosentino with the California Highway Patrol said, "It's a horrible, horrible accident. No drugs or alcohol are thought to be in play. It's just one of those things where we need to make sure that when we back, that we back safely and that we watch our children -- know where they're at at all times."

The mother was not cited.
