Fresno State President Dr. John Welty has announced he is retiring at the end of the school year.
Dr. Welty made the announcement Friday morning at the State of the Campus Address.
Dr. Welty says there is really never a good time to retire but he has been contimplating this move for the past six months and after this school year, he will be ready to move onto other things like teaching. Welty also says he will stay on as a trustee professor with the CSU System.
Dr. Welty began his tenure as president of Fresno State in August of 1991 and is the longest serving president in the 102 year history of Fresno State.
Welty, who turns 68-years-old next week, says he owes his accomplishments to the faculty and staff.
Many people say one of Dr. Welty's greatest strength has been raising money for the campus. Under his leadership, the university has raised $350 million.
Dr. Welty says he and his wife plan to eventually move to a home they own in the Palm Springs area.
