After two murders and two shootings in less than 24 hours, Fresno police are stepping up efforts to stop the violence.

Officers are putting extra focus on gang members because those gang members are believed to be behind the crimes.

Officers in South Fresno are at the center of the stepped up enforcement. This is where the murders and shootings have occurred.

Sgt. James Fowler leads one of the crime suppression teams that has spent the past 48 hours tracking down gang members.

"We're focusing on the individuals themselves, some areas more than others," Fowler said.

Investigators believe that gang members are behind two murders Sunday night: the killings of 33-year-old Roberto Briseno and 35-year-old Omar Silva.

Briseno was shot and killed after he stopped a burglar from breaking into a neighbors car.

Silva was killed by a gunman who came to his door after a Super Bowl party.

Police want the gang violence to stop.

"We're hoping to put enough pressure on them, get enough weapons, get the message out that this won't be tolerated," Fowler said.

And they are getting the gang members' guns.

This handgun was seized from a gang member after an officer heard gunshots at Fresno and Grant.

She was a few blocks over. She stopped a car and found the gun in a gang member's jacket.

"In fact we knew that was the weapon that had been used in the shots fired because it was still actually hot to the touch," Fowler said.

Police expect to continue this stepped up enforcement until the violence subsides.
