Lucky to be alive.

Families and children escape a blaze.

It happened around 7:30pm Thursday, at an

apartment near KingsCanyon and Sunnyside in

Fresno.

The fire started in a bedroom of a 14 unit complex.

The apartment is unlivable, but eight adults and two children made it out safely.

Including Hester Phillips…

She was in the living room; her 9-year old son in the bedroom which firefighters say caught on fire.

“When I go in the room, the whole bed was on fire and the lamp that's plugged by the bed,” said Hester Phillips.

“We're real glad they had a working smoke detector
otherwise this would've been a different story,” said Fresno Fire Spokesman Koby John.

It took 40 firefighters to fight the fire. The cause is still under investigation.

Residents are staying at the Red Cross.
