Fresno police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left one man dead.

The incident happened around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday morning near intersection of Millbrook and Browning, which is not far from Fresno State.

The investigation is being looked at as a possible case of suicide-by-cop.

Both the Fresno Police Department and the District Attorney's Office were on the scene gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.

The name of the suspect has not been released but police say he is in his 20s.

The incident started with one of the suspect's roommates calling in saying the man was outside their house armed with a shotgun and was firing off rounds.

A half dozen officers responded and set up a perimeter.

The officers were working off information that the suspect was depressed, so they tried talking with him, urging him to put the weapon down.

About 10 minutes into the conversation, with a crisis negotiator still on his way to the scene, the situation took a turn for the worse.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said, "This individual raised the pistol gripped shotgun and pointed it toward the direction of the officers, and officers at that time felt that they were about to be shot and six officers did fire at the individual who was armed. There were minimal rounds fired from the officers and the individual fell in the front yard and he is deceased."

There were three other young men in the house at the time. Officers got them out safely and interviewed them to try to learn more about their roommate.

Police say they responded to the same house about three weeks ago for a disturbance involving this same suspect, however things calmed down and no arrests were made.

This is Fresno's 8th officer-involved shooting of the year. Last year there were eleven.
