Bars are hot for 2013 celebrations.

And police are patrolling hotspots.

We rode along with Officer Monty Lewis on Friday night.

He tracked down possible traffic violators...

But its drunk drivers he plans to get off the streets...with checkpoints scheduled throughout New Years.

“We put a lot more traffic officers on the street to try to combat the DUI driving,” said Officer Lewis.

Beefed up patrols ...call it a holiday tradition.

“We end up probably making more DUI arrests during that time.”

Officer Lewis says the DUI task force led to more DUI arrests in Fresno this year compared to last.

2011 ended in about 2900 DUI arrests.

This year to date--close to 3200…in the city of Fresno alone.

“One thing we can show each other is respect on the streets during the holidays or any other day…best thing we need to do is care for each other,” said Louis Garcia…having drinks at the bar.

Louis Garcia is cabbing it home.

Bobby Salazar's doesn't tolerate irresponsible drinking.

“We only allow people to drink a certain amount before we say, hey you know slow down before we say have some water or coffee or something like that,” said Manager Conor Milligan.
