Update: The female victim has been identified as 24-year-old Regan Johnson.
A highway construction worker was struck and killed around 2:00 a.m. on Highway 99 near Clinton.
The driver was reportedly traveling too fast through the construction zone, hit the worker and continued on without stopping.
Investigators closed the northbound lanes of the highway while they gathered evidence but all lanes are now back open.
Gill Pearsol with the California Highway Patrol said, "At approximately 2:10 a silver, a dark silver or dark gray Nissan, unknown make but a newer model, entered the closure, was driving at - witnesses described it as excessive speed and unfortunately struck one of the workers, one of the contractors that was out here with Caltrans doing work on the road, and unfortunately that worker suffered fatal injuries as a result of the collision."
The CHP is asking anyone to report a gray or silver Nissan with extensive damage to the right side of the vehicle. A passenger side mirror was left at the scene of the accident as well. The number to call is 559-441-5400.
