A 14 year old boy is hospitalized. And a witness risked his own life to help catch the gunman.
It happened around six-thirty Tuesday evening on Harvey Avenue near Abby and Freeway 180.
More than a dozen Fresno Police officers converged on an apartment where the suspect was spotted.
The 16 year old gunman had been followed by a man who witnessed the shooting. The witness told CBS47 he ran after the teen for three blocks and then knocked on his door. The gunman told him it wasn’t any of his business and threatened to shoot the witness.
The witness left and flagged down a police officer.
The witness said he ran after the gunman because he was angry – there were at least a dozen children playing in the street at the time, who could have also been injured.
Investigators say the victim was working on a car with several other people. When the gunman came up and said something about gangs.
“For unknown reasons the suspect made the gang calls and walked up and fired multiple rounds,” said Lt. Anthony Martinez with Fresno Police.
Maria Benitez was across the street from the shooting with her grandson.
“And I heard six shots and I thought I got shot and I was like ahhh!” Benitez said.
She grabbed her grandson and ran inside.
Officers arrested a 16 year old for the shooting and a 15 year old for being an accomplice. It appears the suspects are part of a gang. The victim is not.
