It's this fearless four-year-old's first time in the snow.  The Berna family takes advantage of the holiday to share the experience together.

“[He was] really excited; just couldn't hardly wait.  I mean, the first glimmer of snow he's like, ‘There's snow!’” said Julie Berna, a Hanford resident.

The first significant snowfall, about six inches on Saturday, blanketed the landscape around Shaver Lake.  Typically crowds follow the snow, but Monday, it's relatively quiet.

“Real surprised.  Over where we live I think there's only two other couples who live in the complex,” said Al Sanchez, a part-time resident.

It's a disappointing weekend for businesses, which count on the snow bringing in customers.

“Most of my customers have just been locals.  Looks like the traffic on the roads has been slow even though it's beautiful and roads are clear!” said Sandi Self of Ken’s Market.

Self hopes the soft opening of China Peak, tentatively set for Saturday, November 17th, will help move some inventory.

“We've stocked our snow chains, we have gloves, hats, we have sleds, toboggans, and of course any kind of snacks and hot coffee,” said Self.

Whether sledding, making the perfect snowballs without getting your hands wet, or enjoying nature's most simple snack, adventures wait in Shaver Lake.

“We thought we'd get out the house ‘cause we've been stuck inside all weekend because it's been so cold.  I didn't quite realize there'd be quite this much snow out here, but I figured we'd come up here and burn some energy,” said Sarah Kirk, who brought her kids from Clovis.

The roads in Shaver Lake are wet but clear.  Still, carrying chains is a good idea for any mountain drive.
