The City of San Jose is looking for a new police chief and Fresno's top cop is on the short list.

Their list of potential candidates includes Jerry Dyer, along with Sacramento's chief.

San Jose needs a replacement by mid January and many who live there say a search isn't necessary.

City Councilman Pierluigi Oliverio said, "I think we have people that maybe we should take a look and forego the process and I think retired captain Gary Kirby would be an outstanding selection for our next police chief."

David Vossbrink with the City of San Jose said, "This is a critically important position for the City of San Jose. It's one of the most visible appointments that we have. Very important for the city manager who makes that appointment, so we want to make sure we listen to our community."

The city manager makes the final call.

CBS47 is attempting to speak with Chief Dyer about the opening.
