President Obama invites Mayor Swearengin to special event

"It's so good to be back in Vegas," President Barack Obama said. 

President Obama used Las Vegas as a backdrop as he outlined his plan for comprehensive immigration reform.

" We define ourselves as a nation of immigrants, that's who we are in our bones," President Obama said.

He welcomed some very special guests; mayors from 4 different cities including Fresno's own Mayor Ashley Swearengin.

Mayor Swearengin says it was a exciting to be in the same room as the president as he addressed one of the most important issues that would heavily impact the central valley.

"Because our unique division in the world's economy, Fresno is included in the presentation today," Swearengin said.

Fresno holds a unique place in the immigratiion debate because if it's large immigrant population.

President Obama frames his argument for reform in national and global terms.

"It's promise we see in those who come here from every part of the globe that's always been our strength," President Obama said.

Mayor Swearengin says the president's plan signals optimism.

"They seem to be very consistent with what we're hearing from congressional leaders and more than anything he was trying to build momentum to work through this difficult issue," Swearengin said.
