The two Pit Bulls involved in Wednesday's dog attack will be put down, according to Liberty Animal Control.  Workers say the dogs can't be adopted out for liability reasons.  The Pit Bulls' owner voluntarily gave the dogs up Thursday morning.  Wednesday afternoon they reportedly mauled a 10 pound Dachshund named "Starlight."

Caged at Liberty Animal Control, CBS47 finds the two pit bulls that mauled a Dachshund.  The dogs apparently broke through the fence separating two backyards.

"There was blood underneath the jaw of one of the dogs, which was clear because the dog was white," said Daniel Bailey of Liberty Animal Control.

Starlight is greatly missed by his owner.

"Still very upset.  He was my little baby," said Lavonne Reger, Starlight's owner.

Reger had just let Starlight and her other dogs outside when the attack happened.  She wishes her neighbors would have kept a closer eye on their pit bulls.

"High risk dogs, I guess is a good way to call them, to make sure they stay in their yard," said Reger.

A man who lives in the neighborhood says he sees dogs off leash all the time.  He blames their owners.

"They do not care.  They don't care.  They think it's a free world and they can do what they want," said John Hannan.

Animal control says the Pit Bulls' owner tearfully signed the dogs over to its custody on Thursday.  They'll likely be euthanized within 48 hours.  Liberty would be liable if it tried to find new owners for the dogs.

"Having it occur to a child or somebody else, we wouldn't take that risk," said Bailey.

CBS47 did try to reach the owner of the Pit Bulls, but no one was at home.

If you choose to own a pit bull/bully dog, you own a dog who can never ever be permitted to be outside without your control. You own a dog who can never be permitted to become a loose or stray dog. You must become educated about your dog and the pit's unique heritage, abilities and instincts to kill other dogs and when no dog is available, to attack others. Perhaps no dog is born "bad", but "good" pits kill each other. Most non-bully dogs do not have this goal, especially to strange dogs off home territory. But "good" pits do want to kill other dogs. Some pits do not mature and become "good" pits until 2-6 years of age. Pit mongers share the responsiblity of the death of the victim dachshund and the deaths of the pits. They lie to the public, saying that pits will not attack/kill unlesss specifically trained to do so, or abused. Well, no one tells a beagle owner "Now, don't abuse your dog, or train him to bark or sniff and he won't. If he gets loose, he will just stand there. He won't run, barking chasing rabbits, because you didn't train him to chase rabbits." No, everyone knows that it is beagle instinct to sniff and chase rabbits! A small percentage might not like to sniff, but most do this due to instinct.

One of the saddest facts about the pit bull crisis is that, just like the creators of the pit bull, the current pit mongers do not care about dog welfare. They do care about themselves and their ability to breed/buy/acquire/own the dog of their choice. They do care about themselves. Period. The disproprotionate suffering and death caused by and suffered by pits being "good" pits while they maim/kill other dogs, is acceptable to the pit mongers. Since it is illegal for me to break into my neighbor's house/yard, stab holes into their dog, slice open the victim dog's belly, then let's make it illegal to breed more of the dog specifically designed to do these same things! Enact and enforce mandatory spay/neuter microchipping of all pits, pit mixes, all dog aggressive dogs. No responsible pit owner is punished, as his dogs are spays/neuters. If a boxer mix is "misidentified", no problem, she gets spayed. Breeders of other dogs: know who is buying your pups and for what purposes. When in doubt, spay/neuter your pups before sale, to prevent your pups from the selective breeding for increasing dog aggression and reactivity and lack of social skills. If you fail and over the decades your breed becomes the "next pit bull", your breed gets added to the mandatory spay/neuter law. Unless you are a dog fighter and NEED deadly dog aggression, you would support this solution.
