A 28-year-old Chowchilla man died after being electrocuted by downed power lines following a crash.

The accident happened Wednesday night near Road 16 and Avenue 21 in Madera County.

The victim hit a power pole that left several live power lines dangling on the ground.

The man was electrocuted when he stepped out of his car.

Sgt. John Johnson with the California Highway Patrol said, "It would appear that had he stayed within his vehicle that he would have been okay, or in this case, had he even exited outside his vehicle maybe on the passenger side, away from the downed line, he would have been alright."

The victim has been identified as 28-year-old Ryan Reedy of Chowchilla.
