A police investigation is underway after a fraternity pledge at Fresno State dies following a weekend party.

The Theta Chi national organization has suspended its Fresno chapter.

The atmosphere in and around the Theta Chi frat house appeared to be calm Sunday evening.  Then just after 6:00, the doors kicked open and members filed out.  They hopped into their cars and drove out the iron gates one by one.  All of them followed a mandate from their national organization to not speak a word about the death of a freshman pledge.

“It’s appalling to think someone died from trying to be part of an organization,” said Charles Jones, a Fresno State Senior.

Charles Jones is a Fresno state senior who was saddened to hear of the death of 18-year old Philip Dhanens.

“This is his first semester so this is like wow he didn't even have a chance to get that full college experience.  It just sucks you know,” said Jones.

According to police, Dhanens had been drinking a lot Friday night into Saturday morning.  Someone in the fraternity put him in the so-called "Sober Up Room.”  Later when a person checked on him he was unconscious so they called 911.  Dhanens later died at the hospital.

A similar incident took place in 2006 involving the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.  It was banned five years after 19-year old Danny Daniels died from alcohol poisoning inside the house.

Although fraternities are located off campus and the university does not run them, this tragedy will no doubt cast a dark shadow on the college.

“As far as Fresno State, it's just bad that they have to be associated with that you know,” said Jones.

All Fresno State fraternities must now suffer the consequences of Theta Chi's actions.  As long as this investigation is open, none of the houses are allowed to have alcohol.

underage binge drinking is not just encouraged by this society it is glamorized. the majority of college students who drink do so to fit in. I went to college AFTER being in the Army. I was amused by my student peers that 5 or so years younger then me had the maturity of a retarded gang banger. You parents pay a fortune to send your children to diploma mills and do nothing to instill in them a moral compass or any amount of wisdom. this is now tradition in this nation. These drunken fools are the future of America and the rest of us sober Americans have to deal with them......so much for Higher Education..

At present the induction process commonly known as hazing prevalent at many colleges is not being ruled out as a cause that may have led to the student’s untimely death. It's also indicative that too many people think that they have to do stupid things in order to be considered worthy to join a fraternity. Or maybe peer pressure allows it….? http://scallywagandvagabond.com/2012/09/college-freshman-dies-after-heavy-drinking-at-fresno-frat-house-hazing-involved/

I for one hope that the investigation remains open until h..l freezes over. This young man's death isn't the first but it should be the last. Fresno State should permanently severe all ties with fraternities and sororities, expell every current member of Theta Chi, and ask DA Eagan to file manslaughter charges against the current officers of Theta Chi who obviously sponsored the party. And the liquor store that sold the alcohol should have its license yanked by the State. It is d..n clear that these extremely immature adults cannot be trusted to not say no to drinking and the hand slaps they have gotten far too often in the past have done nothing to encourage proper conduct.

I agree "proatc" but what do you expect from mainstream media these days? They are all about shock reporting, not providing facts. The lasting impression Ch. 47 has left is that the real tragedy is that the other sororities will now suffer because they can't drink anymore.....pathetic. Bless the hearts of this young man's family. I hope all of those with common sense and decency will be remembering them, not the issue of whether or not the frat houses will be able to drink now.....

Sad to add lib at the end of the story that all other fraternities must now suffer and cannot have alcohol while the investigation is open! So lets bury the guy quickly, rap up the case so the other fraternities don't have to suffer without alcohol. Sad, sad, sad ad lib line channel 47, please have some respect, show some class and just stick to reporting the facts!
