Kern County health officials say a 9-year-old girl has died from the flu.

The child was a fourth grader in the Fruitvale School District.

The Kern County Health Department says the girl was healthy beforehand. "There's no evidence of this child having even being ill on the last day she was at school," said Dr. Claudia Johah with the Kern County Health Department.

To avoid the flu, follow the three Cs: Cover your cough, clean your hands and make sure you confine yourself to your home. Also, health officials say it's not too late to get a flu shot.

In related news, some local churches have taken measures to protect their members from the flu.

Members at Saint Johns Cathedral in Fresno are now not allowed to drink wine from a common cup passed during communion.

It's something the church has done in the past to keep members healthy.

The policy will continue through flu season.
