A familiar tune rose above Bulldog Stadium Saturday as hundreds paid tribute to former Fresno State football coach Jim Sweeney. And it's one of Sweeney's favorite tunes that former player Bill Szpor remembers most.

"Bulldog born, bulldog bred, gonna be a bulldog until I'm dead. That never leaves us," said Szpor.

Little was forgotten inside Bulldog Stadium as fans and players alike recalled Sweeney's unique abilities.

"He understood what made a great football coach and a great leader. You get the most from the least and the best from the best," said former bulldog Trent Dilfer.

Former players, community members and Sweeney’s own family told stories about the school's most successful football coach. Some were funny and others poignant but it was a challenge his son Kevin wanted people to remember most.

"Be a better person, be a better community member, be a better husband and wife, just challenge yourself to be better because that's what Jim Sweeney wanted us all to be," said Kevin Sweeney.
