Copper thieves have a new target: your water. There's been a spike in copper wire theft at water plants.

Fresno police have arrested two men.

They’re accused of stripping thousands of dollars worth of copper wire from a water plant early Wednesday morning.

They were caught on camera and they didn't get far.

Officials say they’ve seen dozens of similar cases within the last two weeks, and it’s putting our water supplies at risk.

“24 wells that's ten percent of our wells; we have 265 wells so that many wells down. Luckily for us it's in the winter,” Said Director of Public Utilities Martin Querin.

Fresno's public utilities department says the thefts aren't affecting water pressure so far.

They say they’ve beefed up security around water plants.
