This darling dachshund just lost her 5 year old brother starlight.

Both were brought home from valley animal rescue last September, and Wednesday...  tragedy struck.

That's where they attacked him and killed him,” said David Marks.

Starlight's owner David Marks says the neighbor's dogs...two Pitbulls... mauled his beloved pet to death, in his own backyard.

“For whatever reason, they were off the leash. they heard our little guy barking at him. They followed him. i guess instinct,” said Marks.

Marks says the dogs chewed their way through the fence and attacked.

“I just took some rocks here and started chucking rocks on ‘emand they took one look at the little dead dog and took off and went back to their house,” Marks said.

The Fresno County Sheriff's Department says the Pitbulls are at Liberty Animal Control.

We went to the owner’s home to get their side of the story.

The owner wasn't home.

Fresno's Bully Rescue says Pitbulls, much like other breeds, need to be monitored.

They should be properly contained at all times, or under your control, this is a powerful breed,” said Becky Holly with the Bully Rescue.

Starlight's owners want their tragedy to become a positive…possibly life saving message to all dog owners.

“I want owners of these dogs to make sure these dogs don't get out of their yard...or be responsible.”

According to the public education website, dogsbite.org, pitbull breeds make up only 4.4% of the dog population but of the 3392 dog bites resulting in bodily harm, 2383 were carried out by pit bulls or pitt bull mixes - 70%. http://www.dogsbite.org/dog-bite-statistics-study-dog-attacks-and-maimings-merritt-clifton.php These stories are far too common. Even watching programs like the People's Court you see that such a high percentage of dog on dog attacks are from pit bulls. Yet pit bull owners continue to profess their breed's innocent nature. I understand that some of these animals are very sweet dogs, but the owners need to recognize the nature of this breed. There should be legislation protecting the other breeds from the vicious nature of pitt bulls.
