Donna Whalen does everthing she can to make sure her dog Yogie stays hydrated during the hot summer days.
"I work during the day so I leave the AC at 78 degrees and 4 bowls of water around the house," said Donna Whalen.
Unfortunately, not every pet owner takes proper precaution when leaving thier dogs alone during a heat wave.
Dr. Chris Dobbins deals with these problems first hand.
Lately he's been working tirelessly trying to save the dogs that come in who suffer from heat related conditions.
He says so far he has seen at least one dog die a day from heat exhaustion.
"Dogs can't cool themselves off other than panting so if it's hot they can't cool themselves down," said Dr. Chris Dobbins.
Veterinarians say the heat is not to blame it's the lack of common sense from the pet's owners which can lead to potentially dire consequences.
One example, owners failing to leave the AC on for their pets.
"If you have it off and they are locked in the house, it gets to 90 degrees, and they have no where to go," said Dobbins.
There are certain kinds of breeds that are prone to respiratory problems, and pet owners need to be aware of that when dealing with the heat.
"The smush face, the Bulldogs, the Boston Terriers," said Dobbins
If you're going to be taking them out for a walk, make sure there is plenty of shade and water for your furry friends.
"I talk them to the park in the morning or early afternoon," said Ken Bailey.
The most important thing to remember during the dog days of summer is to never leave them alone in a hot car.
"Don't do it, you will end up with a problem one of these days and you will regret it," said Dobbins.
