Petitioners spent the entire day pushing for last minute signatures.

"Hopefully massive amount of boxes and turn them in," said one petitioner.

Dee Barnes, President of Fresno City Employees says they want to make sure they have more than enough signatures on hand and they're feeling pretty confident about it.

"I believe we'll have over 30,000," said Barnes.

According to the city clerk there needs to be a little less than 22,000 valid signatures, and that number is based on 10 percent of registered voters in Fresno.

"Force the city council to either repeal ordinance or all citizens to vote," Barnes said.

The city council approved a deal to have Mid Valley disposal take over residential trash pick up.
It's a deal that would bring the city about $2.5 million a year in franchise fees paid by the garbage companies, but opponents of privatization say hundreds of jobs are potentially in jeopardy.

I agree John, it made sense. Watch what happens now, Union strike for higher pay. Then the city of Fresno will be forced to charge more for garbage pick up or they'll just keep having to increase taxes to balance a budget. It's a domino effect

I vote for Privatization....and lower rates! Who needs union-paid garbage collectors? My trash will be picked up just as skillfully as before, I am quite certain, and I wont have to pay nearly as much as I do now. And the city benefits by using the money to keep lots of others employed and ongoing projects going to improve this place.
