If you're scheduled for a cesarean (see-SAIR-ee-an) delivery, you may want to consider a cesarean childbirth class. This class covers some of the same important information as a prenatal class, like anatomy and physiology, and signs of labor. In addition, you'll learn about the special considerations of a C-section birth, and may view an actual cesarean birth on film. Topics covered may include how to be mentally and emotionally prepared for cesarean delivery; epidural (ep-ih-DOOR-al) anesthesia (an-es-thee-zee-ah); what kind of surgical procedure to expect; and the role of a coach. You'll probably learn how to care for yourself after the delivery. Cesarean births require longer recovery time, so you'll need to be informed about what type of discomfort is normal, and what might be a warning sign of infection or other complications. You should also have a clear understanding of possible risks to you or your baby. Though rare, problems are more common in cesarean birth than regular delivery. Finally, the instructor may go over the procedures for admission and discharge from the hospital. For more information about cesarean birth classes, contact a local hospital or health care provider.
