All family members, no matter how independent, have a direct or indirect effect on the family as individuals with personal likes, dislikes, strengths, and weaknesses. Family problems can begin to occur if a member refuses to realize that, though he or she is an individual, all must work together and live harmoniously within the family group. Communication is the key to establishing ground rules and accomplishing individual and family goals. Being able to communicate well does not mean a family will never have arguments, but the arguments should be constructive and focused on working out solutions to problems. Open communication takes time and energy, things that are sometimes difficult to come by in our busy lives. Some families set aside a specific time each week for open communication between all family members. For more information on family communication, contact a counseling professional.
