There are more than 200 possible causes for tinnitus (TIN-IT-US), a ringing, buzzing or clicking in the ears, without any known external source of the sound. It may be caused by damage to the ear from trauma or loud noises, or it could be one of many symptoms of another condition. Labyrinthitis (LAB-IH-RINTH-ITIS) is an inner ear infection that frequently includes tinnitus among its symptoms. Since this part of the ear also controls balance, dizziness or vertigo may also be present. There's no cure for tinnitus, but relief may be possible. A hearing specialist can perform tests to determine the frequency and nature of the sound you hear and recommend devices or procedures that can mask it or make it tolerable.
