Shaking hands with his future players for the first time, Adrian Wiggins' new job at Clovis East is finally official. CBS47 broke the news back in December. The district announced the hire Monday and held an event for media Tuesday. A junior on the basketball team says he's been waiting for this moment for weeks.
“We just all started smiling, laughing, ‘let's go, let's get him right now.’ We were ready,” said Cole Morgan, a player on the boy’s basketball team.
The Timberwolves Athletic Director says he did a national search for a new head coach. He first spoke to Wiggins back in October, not long after he lost his job at Ole Miss.
“It's very intense. One thing about Clovis Unified is we go after the best,” said Anthony Morales.
Balloons and signs welcome Wiggins to campus Tuesday. He says Clovis East is a perfect fit for the new chapter in his life.
“I've watched Clovis East, Clovis West play a game in that gym, my children played in that gym. It's a great place,” said Wiggins.
Players say they're anxious for the well-known former college coach to start. They hope he can help return them to Valley Championship form. The Timberwolves last won that title in 2010.
“Definitely more wins than losses. And he will definitely step up the program and our expectation levels and our players,” said Morgan.
But Wiggins isn't talking about wins or losses just yet.
“What outside people put on Clovis East and our program is not what motivates us. I'm motivated by making us better every single day,” said Wiggins.
Wiggins starts teaching immediately. He'll take on boys basketball responsibilities beginning in July.
The Timberwolves play Memorial Tuesday night at 7:30 and there’s sure to be a lot of energy with the announcement of Wiggins leading the program.
