Sources have told me former Bulldog Mike Martz, now the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator, is interested in the Fresno State head coaching job.
But today, Martz basically said the rumors of his interest in any other job are simply not true, which, according to my sources, is just Martz being professional.
MIKE MARTZ: obviously, I plan on being back here and want to be here, and i'm just going to assume it's all going to work out - college jobs and those things - we're focused on this job and what we're doing - very happy here - that kind of stuff is always out there as you know - it's got to start someplace but i'm disappointed.
J.D. Williams was one of the best cornerbacks to ever wear a Fresno State uniform.
And, after earning his stripes as an assistant coach all over the west coast, Williams told me Wednesday he wants to be the Bulldogs next head coach.
Williams is now the assistant head coach at UNLV.
He's currently on a recruiting trip in Dallas.
Williams told me he has not talked to Fresno State Athletics Director Thomas Boeh, but hopes to do so soon.
GEORGE TAKATA: are you interested in becoming the next head football coach at fresno state?
J.D. WILLIAMS: oh very interested in becoming the next head coach - great program - i've always loved fresno state - grew up watching fresno state and I believe it's a sleeping giant there - you say you have to go away to come back so here's an opportunity for me to come back and I think i've got to take full advantage of it.
And, reports out of Memphis say former Fresno State offensive coordinator Jim McElwain, now the O.C. at Alabama, accepted the head coaching position at Memphis but changed his mind.
McElwain was on Pat Hill's staff in 2007.
His name has been linked to the Fresno State job as well.
Fresno State is using the same search firm Memphis did to find their next head coach, Eastman and Beaudine.
Memphis hired TCU co-offensive coordinator Justin Fuente instead.
