"Great men of character, guys that I know personally, have known for a long, long time."
Tim DeRuyter isn't the newest Fresno State football coach anymore. In fact, he's not even the only coach named "Tim."
On Wednesday, DeRuyter introduced seven of his assistant coaches. One of them is Tim McDonald: valley native, former NFL player and, most recently, the coach at Edison High School.
"I have to be honest, this is just an opportunity to coach college football at home" said McDonald. "And do something special right here in my community."
McDonald will coach the secondary, the same position he played for 13 NFL seasons. He'll report to Nick Toth, the new defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, who spent the past two years atTexas A&M with Coach DeRuyter.
"The talk of the Red Wave has got me so excited right now," said Toth. "I came from a place that's got a really good tradition, Texas A&M. I'm coming to a place that's got great tradition, a place that's done it recently."
The new offensive coordinator is Dave Schramm. He was at Utah the past seven years, where he did everything; he was the OC, the recruiting coordinator, and the position coach for running backs, quarterbacks and tight ends.
"There's not gonna be a lot of huddling. I'm gonna try to run as many plays as we can," said Schramm. "We're gonna try to score as many points as we can score. I'm not gonna take my foot off the pedal 'till Tim tells me too.
"But that's what I was brought here to do."
Phil Earley is the new recruiting coordinator. Pete Germano will coach special teams and the defensive line. There are still three openings on Coach DeRuyter's staff that need to be filled.
