Jalen Saunders has an active streak going of seven straight games with a touchdown catch.
He caught 12 touchdowns in 2011, more than any other receiver in the Western Athletic Conference. A first-team all-WAC player, Saunders became the seventh Bulldog with more than 1,000 receiving yards in a season.
But it's not football season now.
"I'm a football player always," said Saunders. "I just have the God-given ability to run track also."
And he'll be doing just that - running track - at the annual "Run for the Dream" Invitational this weekend.
"It helps me gain more speed," said Saunders. "If you have track speed, it can showcase really well on the football field."
Jalen Saunders has a track background. When he was in high school, he qualified for state in the 100 and 200-meter dashes. He'll be running the 55-meters this weekend.
But since he's technically not on the Fresno State track team, he'll be running unattached.
Saunders has been training since mid-December. His 40-yard-dash time in the summer was 4.33 seconds.
"I've been running a lot of hills, I've been running a lot of stadiums," he said. "I'm just going out there to compete. That's what I love to do."
Whether it's track or football. It's up to coach Tim DeRuyter if he'll be allowed to do both.
"When spring ball rolls around, I'm gonna be in spring ball," said Saunders.
