"Ohio State was a great football team that we played," said David Carr.  "Good defense."

That defense intercepted Carr four times in September of 2000, preventing him from getting in the end zone.

Cal's defense, meanwhile, sacked younger brother Derek Carr four times on Saturday.  It also intercepted him once and returned a touchdown off his fumble.

"I was happy with what he did," said David, who watched the game from the Fresno State sideline.  "He did exactly what they asked him to do.  He didn't try to do more, he didn't try to do anything above what he was supposed to do."

The Bulldogs as a team were supposed to win the game.

Like in 2000, they failed.  But that's called 'growing pains.'

"I thought this was a great learning game for Derek, a lot like David's first game against Ohio State," said head coach Pat Hill.  "This was a good defensive football team."

"You just gotta be tough, that's what it comes down to," said Derek.  "When you get hit, you gotta get back up no matter what it is.  (Cal) got a couple good shots on me and you can't just lie there because the whole team's watching you."

Not just the team, the entire valley.

There's so much hype with the "Derek Carr Era."  At least he had big brother there for reassurance.

"It was good to have him out there," added Derek.  "He's my brother, first of all.  He's not just David Carr.  It was good to have my brother on the sideline and just the fact that he flew his family all the way out here...he just told me, 'hey good job.  Do your job, you're doing a good job, keep doing it.'  "That's really all it was."
