I think it is pretty clear to everyone that the only Big opposition to Prop. 29 is Big Tobacco. And, if they weren't so worried about profits they wouldn't be willing to spend $47 million on TV/Radio advertisement and who knows how much more was spent to buy supporters to tell their lies. Prop. 29 is good for California, the health of all of it's residents and it will protect our kids. When Prop. 29 passes and the price of tobacco goes up Big Tobacco looses their grip on about 228,000 of our kids who will never buy that first pack of cigarettes or light up the first time. These kids will live much healthier/ longer lives. I lost my husband to smoking related disease, he started smoking at 14 and died at 59. To the Tobacco Companies and others who sell tobacco without a thought to the devastation they cause - it is time to find another use for tobacco or another business, no one has the right to cause health problems or even death to others, especially not just for profit! A YES VOTE ON PROP. 29 WILL PROTECT OUR KIDS AND GRAND-KIDS and it will allow all residents of California to live a healthier life because they will not be exposed to so much 2nd hand smoke. Please join me - I'VE ALREADY VOTED YES ON PROP. 29 because it is good for our kids and it is good for California.

A Yes vote on Prop 29 will raise the tax on every pack of cigarettes (current tax in California is 87 cents with 33 states having a higher tax), and because of the higher price will prevent many young people from ever starting to smoke in the first place. If we vote Yes on Prop 29, we in California will enjoy reduced tobacco use, reducing the enormous amount WE ALL PAY FOR NOW in taxes to support the health care costs of those who choose to smoke. Only 2% of Prop 29 funds can be used to administer Prop 29. It's all in the League of Women Voters pamphlet www.easyvoterguide.org. Yes on 29 is supported by American Heart Association, American Lung Association, American Cancer Society, California PTA, San Diego Union Tribune, Bakersfield California, Desert Sun, Santa Barbara Independent, Santa Maria Times, San Jose Mercury News, San Francisco Chronicle and the Sacramento Bee. The "no" side of the issue is supported by $47 MILLION in misleading tv commercials from Philip Morris Tobacco, RJ Reynolds Tobacco. These tobacco companies sell Marlboro, Camels and Newports to our kids, addicting them to nicotine, giving them lots to look forward to: cancer, heart disease, stroke, COPD, emphysema, wrinkles, erectile dysfunction and bad breath. VOTE YES on PROP 29 ON TUESDAY, JUNE 5th! Anyone who tells you to vote NO on Prop 29 is hooked up to BIG TOBACCO. Tobacco companies will lose $800 million a year in lost sales if this passes. Why would you sympathize with the seller of tobacco products that are killing our population? Prop 29 will save lives by cutting the number of current adult smokers, discourage kids from starting this destructive habit, and fund life-saving research. In other states, similar tobacco tax hikes were VERY successful at cutting smoking. You are doing smokers a favor by passing a tax that will push them to quit this self-destructive habit. Don't feel sorry for them if they pay the tax a short time before they quit. If they quit, this might just save their lives! The way it is now, YOU and I pay LOTS of doctor bills related to smoking. Calif taxpayers shoulder quite a ridiculous burden now--THE AVERAGE CALIF FAMILY'S TAX BURDEN FOR SMOKING-RELATED HEALTHCARE FOR OTHERS IS $621 a YEAR! While the current cigarette tax in Calif. is 87 cents a pack, smoking-caused costs (healthcare plus lost productivity) are $15.21 a pack. IF WE DO NOT ACT NOW, YOU AND I WILL CONTINUE TO PAY THESE HIGH BILLS for the low-income smokers who puff away our dollars as they get ill. With Prop 29, we SAVE LIVES and CUT smoking-related healthcare costs for all of us by discouraging smoking. Prop 29 will lead to 13.7% decreases in youth smoking and will also prevent over 200,000 current Calif. kids from becoming addicted smokers. Big Tobacco hooks about 37,000 kids/year to replace smokers who die from lung cancer, emphysema and cardiovascular problems caused by smoking. Currently 13,000 Californians a year die from lung cancer! If we pass Prop 29, we will save Calif. taxpayers 5.1 billion dollars in long-term healthcare costs. DOESN'T IT MAKE SENSE TO PREVENT SMOKING DAMAGE? ON JUNE 5th, VOTE YES FOR PROP 29; YOU MAY SAVE THE LIFE OF SOMEONE YOU LOVE!
