This week's CBS47 Cool School is Kastner Intermediate School in Fresno, part of the Clovis Unified School District.
At Kastner, they encourage students to stay active. Athletic Director Matt Mikolavich belives if you get kids involved in a variety of sports, not just one, but several sports, it can translate into better performance, both on and off the field.
On many campuses, kids are involved in athletics and put all their focus on one sport: football, baseball, basketball, wrestling, etc. But at Kastner, Mikolavich wants kids to try numerous sport to keep them busy from the beginning of the school year to the end. It's all about keeping the kids healthy and involved with positive activities, and training them to manage their busy days.
Matt Mikolavich said, "To me, I think if you stay busy, you're learning how to manage your time, in a better time. If you have free time, you think - oh, I can get to it later."
Principal Johnny Alvarado said, "When kids are connected to school, participating - be it visual and performing arts or athletics, they do better in school, better academically, better behaviorally. We are witnessing both of those areas."
The school encourages kids to try more than one sport, by offering a special recognition: the multi-sport athlete award, given to both boys and girls.
Mikolavich said, "It's not really new, it's a philosophy of our old Superintendent, Doc Buchanan. It was mind, body and spirit. If they're participating, they're doing well in school. If they're doing well in school, they'll take more initiative on their own, for their own campus."
Congratulations to all the students, faculty and staff here at Kastner Intermediate.
