CBS47 has some tips to help protect your garden in the colder temperatures.
Meteorologist Justin Sacher visited H&E Nursery in Fresno to get some advice from a professional.
Bob Stoeckle of H&E Nursery suggests using a lightweight cloth to drape over your sensitive plants during the periods of freezing temperatures. "Your keeping the frost from laying down on the plant, so that helps, your keeping the frost off and you get that insulation layer. And then the other one is, yeah, you do get the heat from underneath, from the soil and also from the plant so it does give a little thermal area. So you're kind of making a little greenhouse so to speak," said Stoeckle.
The cloth Stoeckle recommends is called N-Sulate, but he says even a common bed sheet will work. He says products made specifically for this weigh less and don't absorb moisture the way sheets do.
On average, the air is coldest just after sunrise. But if your plants are shaded from the morning sun, keep them covered longer. "Leave that on until late in the morning. Some days we leave it on all day. But just as soon as you can get the sun back on the plant helps," said Stoeckle.
