A Fresno man is under arrest on animal abuse charges.

59-year-old Dana Kahler is in custody, after several horses were found starving at a home on East Shepherd Avenue.

There were a total of 19 horses on the property suffering from varying degrees of malnutrition.  One gelding was in such bad condition, it had to be euthanized.

Kahler was arrested after he was identified as the owner of the horses.

The SPCA is now asking for hay donations to help nurse the starving animals back to health.

If you'd like to help, contact the SPCA at 559-233-7722 or click on the related link to make a monetary donation.

I don't feel bad for this man at all. There are options when you are unable to care or feed your animals but the most important thing here is BEING A RESPONSIBLE PET/ANIMAL OWNER. This man had horses he was unable to feed yet allowed his animals to free breed. At the very least he could have removed the stallions that bred these starving mares that had babies and only added to his problems. That is just plain ignorance !! This man should be locked in pen and with no food, water or care what so ever and left to fend for himself....now that's justice.

Julie, if you can not maintain your pets or livestock there are certainly other options than just letting them starve! There is the SPCA, Craigslist, many other animal rescue organizations that can help or lead you in the right direction for help. If all else fails, you can always GIVE the horses away to those that can financially care for them. I'm sorry, there is no excuse to have 19 horses being starved! No excuse!

I truly feel for Dana Kahler. What people do not realize that many good people take in horses no one wants. I took in two starving horses 3 years ago. The cost of hay has gone up from $6.00 a bale to $14.00 and more. I cannot afford to feed these horses anymore. What are my options. I have tried repeatly to find another home for them. As yet I have no takers. I think you should do a story on all the people that take in unwanted horses and see how they are doing. Don't be quick to judge until you have been in mine and others shoes. Do I pay my PG&E bill or buy a bale of hay that may last a week? The horse were in bad shape and maybe he should of asked for help.
